Description
Beta Pictoris planet and disc. Composite of observations made of the debris disc (bright blue bands) and planet (white dots) located around the star Beta Pictoris. The planet was observed at two points, either side of its parent star. This young star is around 60 light years from Earth in the constellation of Pictor. The planet (Beta Pictoris b) is located at a similar distance from its parent star to Saturn from the Sun, and is about nine times the mass of Jupiter. The debris disc image is from ESO's ADONIS instrument in 1996. The planet images (2003 and 2009) are from the NACO (NAOSâ??CONICA) infrared instrument on ESO's Very Large Telescope.
