Description
Bernardus Paludanus (1550-1633), Dutch physician. Paludanus was originally known as Berend ten Broeke. Here, he is holding a plant. Paludanus studied philosophy and medicine, then travelled widely, visiting England, central Europe and the Middle East. On his return to the Netherlands, he settled in Enkhuizen (where a statue was later erected) and maintained a herb garden and a collection (cabinet) of curiosities. His collection was sold after his death and is now held in the Royal Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark. This engraving by Hendrik Bary (c.1632-1707) is after an original 1629 portrait by Dutch painter Hendrik Gerritsz Pot (c.1580-1657).
