Description
Bats and other mammals. 19th-century artwork of three bat species, and the common European species of hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), mole (Talpa europaea), and shrew (Sorex araneus). At upper left is a Molossus bat. At upper right is a fruit bat from Java (Pteropus javanicus, since renamed P. vampyrus). At centre is a vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus), here referred to by the archaic name Phyllostoma spectrum. Artwork from 'Encyclopaedia Metropolitana', an encyclopedia published in London between 1817 and 1845. Thirty volumes were issued in 59 parts, with 22,426 pages and 565 plates.
