Barred spiral galaxy NGC 1300, optical image. This galaxy lies in the constellation of Eridanus. Barred spiral galaxies are so called due to the band of stars that runs through the central nucleus, with spiral arms spinning off of it. NGC 1300 is classified as an SBc galaxy. It is about 46 million light years away from Earth and is 85,000 light years across. Photographed by the 2.1-metre telescope at the Kitt Peak National Observatory, Arizona, USA.
