Description
Banded iron specimen. These layered mineral formations are among the oldest rocks on Earth. They were laid down in shallow seas where primitive bacteria caused iron to be oxidised and precipitated to form the red layers of haematite. This specimen is 7 centimetres thick, and was obtained from the Murchison Goldfield, Western Australia.
