Description
Automatic weather station. The instruments include an anemometer (far right) and sensors to measure air temperature and humidity (white, centre left). At left of the white sensors is a vertical rod, a solar radiation sensor. Other measurements include ground temperature and rainfall. Data is logged (white box, lower centre) and transmitted (radio antenna, upper left) to an archive. This automatic weather station, in North Carolina Arboretum, is part of the US Climate Reference Network, started in 2001. The network should number 100 stations by 2006. Each station sends data hourly to a national archive. Regular climate records will allow better research into global climate change.
