Description
Australian aboriginal cure. 18th-century artwork titled 'Curing the Headache'. It shows a female Australian aborigine from the New South Wales area, healing a patient who has a headache. A piece of string wrapped around the patient's head is being drawn between her teeth. The blood pooling on the rock in front of her is from her gums, but is said to be from the patient's head. This item, an unattributed work by a Port Jackson painter, dates from the period 1788 to 1797. It is part of the Watling Collection at the Natural History Museum, London, UK.
