Description
Total solar eclipse. Illustration showing the positions of the Sun, Moon and Earth at 17.05 UTC on 21st August 2017. The Moon is passing across the Sun as seen from Earth, creating a solar eclipse. Viewers in the darkest shadowed area (umbra) will witness a total solar eclipse, those in the lighter shadowed area (penumbra) will see a partial solar eclipse. This eclipse will track across the USA from northwest Oregon to South Carolina. Solar eclipses usually occur less than once a year, and can only be seen from a small area of the Earth's surface.
