Description
Female skeleton. Coloured historical illustration of the skeleton of the human female (anterior view), superimposed onto the Venus de Milo statue. The pectoral girdle with ribcage is seen in the thorax. Ribs are fused anteriorly to the sternum breastbone, and they articulate posteriorly with the thoracic vertebrae. The horizontal clavicles (collar bones) attach to the shoulder blades, and articulate with the humerus (upper arm bone). The pelvic girdle is fused to the lower vertebral column. Hip bones articulate with the femur bones of the upper leg. The ribcage skeleton protects the heart and lungs, while the pelvis supports organs of the lower abdomen.
