Description
Army ant. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an Eciton sp. ant. This army ant soldier has massively enlarged hook-shaped mandibles (lower left), which it uses to defend its colony from attack. A compound eye (blue) is in the centre of the head. The jointed antennae protrude from just behind the mouthparts. The antennae are used for touch and smell. The body of the ant comprises the thorax or mesosoma, to which three pairs of legs are attached, and the abdomen or gaster at the rear. Ants are related to bees and wasps. They are social insects and form large colonies. Magnification unknown.
