Description
Ant-mimic caterpillar (Homodes sp.). The larvae of this species of Erebrid moth mimics the appearance of a pair of weaver ants placed back to back. Long setae mimic the appearance of legs and antennae. Towards the head of the caterpillar (right side of image) are a pair of black spots that resemble ant eyes. The result is that weaver ants that would normally defend their territory against other caterpillars, do not attack the ant-mimics, leaving them free to feed on the host plant. Photographed in Singapore.
