Description
Arctic expedition 'Eagle' balloon. 19th-century illustration of the 'Eagle' balloon used by Swedish balloonist Salomon August Andree (1854-1897). Andree's hydrogen-filled balloon was made of varnished silk and was 23 metres high. Andree and two companions set off from Spitzbergen, Norway, in July 1897. Ice formed on the balloon and it landed around 800 kilometres from the North Pole. The bodies of the explorers were discovered in 1930. Artwork from 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
