Description
Apollo 13 mailbox. Interior of the Apollo 13 lunar module showing the 'mailbox' (square device at centre). This device was improvised by the crew after the explosion of one of the oxygen tanks meant they had to move out of the command module and use the lunar module as a 'lifeboat'. The lunar module didn't have a sufficient stock of lithium hydroxide canisters to remove carbon dioxide from the module's air. The mailbox was used to fit command module cube-shaped lithium hydroxide canisters to the lunar module's cylindrical canister sockets. The mailbox was designed and tested on the ground before being fitted on the spacecraft. The Apollo 13 crew made a safe return to Earth on 17th April 1970.
