Description
Apollo 11 recovery after splashdown. Command Module 'Columbia' for NASA's Apollo 11 mission floating in the Pacific Ocean after splashdown on 24 July 1969. An inflatable ring has been deployed to ensure floatation, and the astronauts and a diver in biological isolation suits are in an inflatable boat alongside, waiting to be winched into a recovery helicopter. The astronauts changed into biological isolation suits supplied by US Navy divers. The US astronauts are Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. This historic mission was the first to land astronauts on the Moon. The recovery process that followed included the use of further decontamination and quarantine procedures. The astronauts were flown by helicopter to the USS Hornet. There, they were placed in a Mobile Quarantine Facility (MQF), flown to Houston, Texas, and kept in quarantine for 18 days until 10 August 1969.
