Description
Ant communication. Macrophotograph of unidentified ants (centre right) communicating on a tree trunk. They are seen with other members of their colony. Communication between ants is used to convey a range of information, for example the position of a new food source. It can involve physical contact, as seen here, where the antennae or forelegs of the participants are rubbed together. Nudging and stroking of other ants is also seen. However, communication is usually in the form of chemical signals (pheromones). Physical contact can help to reinforce these chemical signals. Photographed in Ecuador.
