Description
Andree's Arctic balloon expedition. 19th-century illustration of balloonists in the basket of the 'Eagle' hydrogen balloon during the 1897 Arctic expedition of Swedish balloonist Salomon August Andree (left, 1854-1897). Andree and two companions set off from Spitzbergen, Norway, in July 1897. Ice formed on the balloon and it landed around 800 kilometres from the North Pole. The bodies of the explorers were discovered in 1930. Artwork from 'Aerostation - Aviation' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
