Description
Almagestum Novum frontispiece, 1653 edition, originally published in 1651 by the Italian Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli (1598-1671). Argus (left, eyes) and Astraea (right, stars) carry astronomical equipment. Balanced on the scales are Copernicus's heliocentric system (left) and Riccioli's combination system (right). The geocentric Ptolemaic system is discarded at lower right (with the deposed figure of Ptolemy in the background). The hand of God, biblical Latin quotes, and flying cherubs carrying the planets are at top. At top right are Saturn, Jupiter, the Moon and a comet. Venus, Mars, Mercury and the Sun are at top left.
