Description
Algae in a geothermal pool. Mats of algae (green) and mineral deposits (white, yellow) formed by water flowing over rocks near a geothermal pool. Geothermal pools form in areas where volcanic activity causes hot water to rise up from beneath the Earth's surface. The hot water contains large amounts of dissolved minerals, and the heat and minerals can sustain large populations of microscopic plants such as algae, forming the coloured deposits seen here. White deposits usually indicate the deposition of silica or carbonate minerals. Yellow deposits are sulphur. Such areas can also sustain larger plants (lower right and background). Photographed near Rotorua, on New Zealand's North Island.
