Description
Photograph of a 55 years old man afflicted with AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome), lying seriously ill in a hospital bed suffering from Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia, a hitherto uncommon form of pneumonia which proves fatal in AIDS cases, where it occurs as a secondary, opportunistic infection. The patient's body is covered in a rash provoked by drugs given in an attempt to control the pneumonia infection. The AIDS virus (known as HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus) disables its host's immune system by destroying T4 lymphocytes that are key components in the body's defence against invading organisms.
