Description
African elephant bulls fighting. Male African elephants (Loxodonta africana) compete for dominance and access to females with trunk wrestling and pushing. Fights can escalate to tusk charges, sometimes with fatal results. African elephants are the largest and heaviest land animals, weighing up to 6 tonnes. They eat grass, leaves, fruit and bark. Females and young are found in clans led by an elderly female, while mature males associate in separate male groups. African elephants are native to much of sub- Saharan Africa. Their habitat ranges from forest to savanna. Photographed in the Mala Mala Game Reserve, South Africa.
