Description
African Cape Frontier Wars, 19th century. Illustration of fighting in one of the Cape Frontier Wars (Xhosa Wars) that took place in southern Africa between 1779 and 1879. British missionary and explorer David Livingstone (1813-1873) spoke out against such wars. Ordained in 1840, Livingstone explored southern Africa, travelled along the Zambesi River, and discovered and named the Victoria Falls. He mapped parts of Africa's interior, wrote accounts of the native peoples, and campaigned against slavery. Lauded as a hero in Victorian Britain, he died in Africa. Artwork from 'The Life and Explorations of Dr Livingstone', first published in around 1870.
