Description
Aedes aegypti mosquito head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This view, from below, shows the mosquito's compound eyes (green). The female mosquito feeds by using her modified proboscis (the start of which is at top left) to pierce her host's skin and feed on its blood. She uses the blood meal for the production of eggs. This species of mosquito is found throughout tropical Africa and in parts of South America. It is a vector for the transmission of yellow fever, chikungunya, dengue fever and zika viruses to humans.
