Description
Adolf Lorenz (1854-1946), Austrian surgeon. Shortly after beginning his career as a surgeon aged 26, Lorenz developed a severe allergy to the antiseptic carbolic acid. No longer able to operate, he became a 'dry surgeon', treating patients without cutting the skin. By manipulation and traction, sometimes using frames, casts and pulleys, he successfully treated patients with club feet, scoliosis (abnormal curvature of the spine) and congenital dislocation of the hip. Towards the end of his life he held a clinic with his son Albert, also an orthopaedic surgeon, in New York, USA.
