Abraham Jacobi (1830-1919) German-US physician. Jacobi is considered to be the founding father of paediatrics, the medical speciality concerning children. He was born in Germany where he qualified as a doctor. He spent time in prison, having been convicted of treason for supporting the Revolution of 1848. He escaped in 1853 and sailed to England and then the USA. He spent his career in New York City, working at the New York Medical College, the City University of New York, and Columbia University. He helped to found the American Journal of Obstetrics. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries. The photographs date from the 1890s to the 1930s.
