Description
Michael Faraday. Engraving of Michael Faraday (1791-1867), British chemist & physicist, giving a lecture at the Royal Institution, London, in the 1830s. Despite lacking a formal education, Faraday was a brilliant scientist who made several major advances in the field of chemistry, magnetism and electricity. He devised the first electric motor and equipment such as transformers and dynamos. He gave his first impromptu Royal Institution lecture when a scheduled speaker failed to appear. He was a great success and his lectures popularised science amongst the general public. He was made professor of chemistry at the Institution in 1833.
