Description
Egyptian tomb scene, illustration. This scene shows details of a griffin as depicted on the walls of the tomb of Kheti. It dates from the Middle Kingdom (Dynasty 11), from around 2140-1991 BC. This tomb is in Beni Hasan, Middle Egypt. Hieroglyphic writing is at top. A griffin is a mythical creature that is a lion with an eagle's head. This illustration (tempera on paper) was produced in 1931 by Egyptologists Nina de Garis Davies (1881-1965) or Norman de Garis Davies (1865-1941) on an expedition for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
