Description
Titan's surface. Composite infrared Cassini spacecraft image of the surface of Titan, Saturn's largest moon. This is the south pole region. The black area at centre left is thought to be the site of a past or present lake of liquid hydrocarbons. It is thought that liquid hydrocarbons could form as sunlight acts on methane in Titan's upper atmosphere and rain down on to the surface, forming lakes and rivers. The bright white areas are methane clouds. The Cassini-Huygens spacecraft was launched in 1997 to investigate Saturn, its rings and its moons. This image was taken at a distance of 450,000 kilometres on 6 June 2005.
