Description
Mutant fruit fly. The large compound eyes are on either side of the head, with the mouthparts at the front of the head. This is a Drosophila fruit fly. Fruit flies are widely used in genetic experiments, particularly in mutation experiments, because they reproduce rapidly and their genetic systems are well understood. This fruit fly lacks colour, probably a mutation effecting the production of pigments, and its wings are misshapen. Other mutations cause differences in the size and shape of the head, body, legs and wings. For a series of different mutations in fruit flies, see images C040/4064 to C040/4070.
