Description
Static electricity experiment. 19th-century illustration of simple materials such as wax, brass, silk and hair being used to demonstrate static electrical charge. The hair carrying the charge is suspended in mid-air on an insulating thread. The hair then moves towards or away from the experimenter's hand as it approaches, due to the electrical attraction or repulsion. The static electricity is generated by friction. This illustration, part of a section titled 'Experiences de Physique sans Appareils' (illustrating popular physics experiments that don't require the use of laboratory equipment), is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
