Description
Mining bee. Macrophotograph of the head of a female mining bee (Neffapis longilingua). This tiny bee, with its elongated tongue, is associated with desert plants in the genus Malesherbia. It makes its nest in cracks in dry desert soils of Peru and Chile. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other insect species.
