Cuckoo bee. Macrophotograph of a cuckoo bee (Holcopasites calliopsidis). Cuckoo bees are so named for their habit of laying eggs in the nests of other bee species. This tiny species lays its eggs in the nests of Calliopsis andreniformis. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other insect species.
