Description
CERN upgrade, LHC Long Shutdown 1. Close-up of the last sleeve welding splice consolidation (on the M1 line) for LS1 (Long Shutdown 1) by the SMACC (Superconducting Magnets And Circuits Consolidation) team at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, began operating in 2008. LS1 (scheduled from February 2013 to early 2015) is designed to enable operation at higher energies. The main work, as here, is consolidating 10,170 high-current splices between the superconducting magnets along the LHC's 27-kilometre circumference. Photographed on 14 May 2014.
