Description
Calcified uterine fibroid. Coloured X-ray of a section through the pelvis of a female patient with uterine fibroids (white, lower centre) that have become calcified (hardened). Uterine fibroids (leiomyoma,) are benign growths within the uterus, arising from the smooth muscle of the uterus wall. They do not usually require treatment, but can cause bleeding, pain and other disorders. Large fibroids may need to be surgically removed. This patient has also had two hip replacements (white, implants visible at lower left and lower right).
