Description
Asian hornet research. Close-up of a curated specimen of the invasive Asian hornet species Vespa velutina, being prepared for display by a technician. The label identifies it as the subspecies nigrithorax, first identified in 1905 by the French naturalist Robert du Buysson (1861-1946). Vespa velutina, also called the Asian predatory wasp, first appeared in France in around 2004, and has been spreading, attacking people and preying on native honeybee species. Photographed at the French National Museum of Natural History (MNHM) in Paris, France.
