Description
Artificial heart valve. Coloured 3D computed tomography (CT) scan of a transverse section of the heart of a 73 year old woman. An artificial heart valve (white horizontal lines at centre) is replacing the mitral valve that lies between the left atrium and left ventricle. This is the heart in diastole, the period when the heart refills with blood after a contraction. The prosthetic mitral valve is open, allowing blood to pass from the atrium into the ventricle.
