Description
Anaesthesia mask, 1892. This is a modified Schimmelbusch mask. It was invented by Curt Schimmelbusch in 1890, and continued to be used into the 1950s. The wire frame was covered with cotton gauze and placed over the patient's mouth and nose. Volatile liquid anaesthetic (such as ether or chloroform) was dripped on it, allowing the patient to inhale a mix of the evaporated anaesthetic and air. The mask was designed to prevent the anaesthetic contacting the patient's skin, where it could cause irritation.
