Description
369th Infantry Regiment parading with its band in New York in 1919 after the First World War (1914-1918). The soldiers of this regiment were mainly African Americans. It was the first African-American regiment to serve with the American Expeditionary Force during the First World War. They were nicknamed the Harlem Hellfighters and the Black Rattlers. Initially assigned labour duties in France, the regiment was seconded to the French Army and saw active service from April 1918 to the end of the war. Its military band was led by Lieutenant James Reese Europe, during its homecoming parade on 17 February 1919. Thousands lined the streets to see them. This section of the parade was along Lenox Avenue. Photograph by Underwood and Underwood.
