Description
Two of the six musicians which formed part of an unfinished tableau created by the Italian early Renaissance sculptor Benedetto da Maiano (1442-1497) who had been commissioned to commemorate the coronation of the King of Naples. The identification of which sovereign is uncertain: it may be Ferdinando (also known as Ferrante) I d'Aragona, who was crowned king of Naples in 1459, or alternatively, his son Alfonso II, whose coronation occurred in 1494. As Alfonso was forced to abdicate a year later in 1495 when Naples fell with the invasion of Charles VIII of France, this could explain why Benedetto abandoned the project and left the coronation group unfinished.
