Description
Preparing for LHC restart at CERN. Particle physics researcher in the CERN Control Centre (CCC) preparing for a restart of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). CERN is the European particle physics laboratory. The LHC, the world's largest and most powerful particle collider, began operating in 2008. Shutting down and restarting the LHC is a long and involved process. This restart took place in March after the normal winter shutdown, with data recording resuming on 23 Apr 2016. At CERN, particles are accelerated and collided at high speeds, producing new particles that are examined with large detectors. Many of the key discoveries in particle physics have been made at CERN. Photographed in March 2016.
