Description
Michael Faraday. Coloured portrait of the British chemist and physicist Michael Faraday (1791- 1867). Faraday was born into poverty and was poorly educated. He became a laboratory assistant at the Royal Society in London, England. In 1825 he discovered benzene, but is better known for his studies on electrolysis and electromagnetic phenomena. His electromagnetic research formed the background for the unified electromagnetic theory elaborated by James Maxwell. In 1832 Faraday formulated the Laws of Electrolysis which dictate the behaviour of a chemical solution in electric currents. He devised the first electric motor, as well as transformers and dynamos.
