Description
Calcareous phytoplankton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the external mineralised structure (coccosphere) of a small marine algal organism called a coccolithophore (Ophiaster formosus). The coccosphere is made up of coccoliths, which are individual plates of calcite crystals. The long appendages are formed of strings of highly modified coccoliths. Collected in the west Pacific. Specimen diameter 50 micrometers.
