Description
Anaesthesia mask, 1877. This is a Julliard ether mask designed by Dr. Gustave Julliard (1836-1911), a Swiss surgeon. Julliard recommended ether as considerably safer than chloroform for anaesthesia. The wire frame was covered with cotton gauze and placed over the patient's face. Then ether was dripped on it, allowing the patient to inhale a mix of the evaporated anaesthetic and air. Julliard's method involved covering the mask with an impermeable material to prevent excessive evaporation of the ether. The mask was large enough to prevent suffocation of the patient.
