Nearly all of California was in a state of extreme drought at the end of January 2014. This map contrasts plant growth from 17 January to 1 February 2014, compared to the previous decade. Data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites, and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). Brown (which predominates) indicates less plant growth, while green indicates more. Data provided by the Global Agricultural Monitoring Project.
