Description
Thought-controlled wheelchair. Researcher testing a brain-machine interface being used to control a wheelchair. This system uses sixteen EEG electrodes attached to a skull cap (white) and placed in contact with the user's scalp on the upper part of the skull. After a period of training with the computer control system (on lap, showing directional arrows), which includes elements of artificial intelligence, the user can send steering instructions by thought alone. Photographed at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Lausanne, Switzerland. This technology was developed at the EPFL's neuroprosthetics centre in 2010.
