Description
Sheetweb weavers spider. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Sheetweb weavers spiders are widespread in much of Britain. They build densely woven, thin, horizontal sheets that look like silken hammocks in grass and low bushes. Prey falls onto the hammocks or get knocked down when they collide with a tangle of threads above the sheet. Note the large distinctive palps of the male shown here. Magnification: x40
