Description
Seal rehabilitation centre worker with harbour seals (Phoca vitulina) in quarantine. The worker is using a hose to clean and disinfect the quarantine area. This area is kept under pressure to prevent bacteria and viruses entering, and the workers wear special clothing to avoid transmitting infection. This work is being carried out at the Seal Rehabilitation and Research Centre (SRRC), in Pieterburen, the Netherlands. Sick, injured and orphaned seals are treated and cared for here until they can be released back into the wild. The centre was founded in 1971, and treats around 200 seals a year.
