Description
Proxima Centauri b exoplanet surface, illustration. Proxima Centauri (in the sky at centre right) is the closest star to the Sun. It lies 4.25 light years from Earth in the constellation Centaurus. The planet Proxima Centauri b orbits in the habitable zone around Proxima Centauri, where the temperature may be suitable for liquid water to exist on its surface. The landscape shown here is a dry and rocky desert, with features formed by wind and water erosion. The first signs of Proxima Centauri b were seen in 2013, but its presence wasn't confirmed until 24 August 2016. The double star Alpha Centauri AB is at upper centre.
