This small cluster of neurons modulates microglial function through the neurotransmitter norepinephrine (noradrenaline). Axons (red arrows) projected from this region ennervate vast areas of the central nervous system (CNS), including the spinal cord, cerebellum, thalamus and cerebral cortex. Alzheimer's disease is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the formation of protein plaques in the brain. The symptoms include memory loss, personality changes and confusion.
