Description
Mitosis. 3D-structured illumination micrograph (3D-SIM) of two mouse myoblast cell nuclei during the prophase stage of mitosis (nuclear division). During mitosis two daughter nuclei are formed from one parent nucleus. The chromosomes (red) are condensing into defined units, allowing organised and equal segregation into daughter nuclei. Each chromosome consists of two identical chromatids. The nuclear envelope (blue) is breaking down to allow microtubules (green) to interact with the chromosomes. Microtubules will grow from both poles of the cell and attach to the chromosomes, before contracting and pulling the chromatids to opposite poles. The cell goes on to divide in half, with each new cell retaining a copy of the parent cell's genetic information.
