Description
Mining bee. Macrophotograph of a mining bee of the species Anthophora abrupta. This is a solitary, ground-nesting bee. The adult female digs a tunnel, often in clay, using the excavated material to make a chimney-like turret over the nest. Nests are clustered together, but these are considered solitary bees because there is no overlap of generation, and females only care for their own nests and offspring. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other insect species.
